With Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots due out next week, the PlayStation 3’s install base and lack of TV marketing for the game may hinder sales, according to Newsweek’s N’Gai Croal.
“There aren’t as many PlayStation 3s in the marketplace as there are Xbox 360s. That’s clearly something that’s going to hold it back, but I think it will sell PlayStation 3s,” N’Gai Croal, General Editor at Newsweek, said.
“I’m hearing some reports that the marketing for the game, that there may not in fact be TV marketing for it in the United States. If that’s true, that’s definitely going to hold it back...”
According to Croal, Metal Gear Solid 4’s mechanics makes it a better game than Assassin’s Creed, but pointed out that MGS4 may fall behind in marketing.
“Assassin’s Creed was marketed phenomenally well,” Croal said. “It had great TV spots. So they’re not doing TV spots for this game, that’s something that will hold it back.”
“I think the game is going to be incredibly rewarding for anyone who does decide to play it, but my feeling is that there is a bit of a ceiling on it,” he said.
